The solid state odometer is now in its second generation and has proven to be much more reliable than the first generation. It is feasible, and must be included in electronic instrument packs in the near future. The devices have now been proved to be reliable to well over 3 million miles in bench tests, and the software is now at a sufficiently advanced stage to encourage motor manufacturers to have confidence in them. We must expect to see a dramatic increase in the use of non-volatile memories in automobiles, especially for engine control and dashboard use such as odometers and providing customised display facilities.
