The concept of a traffic sensing radar was shown to be feasible. However, the excessive antenna beamwidth seriously degraded the performance at ranges in excess of 30 m. A system working at 24 GHz or preferably 36 GHz would enable the correct antenna beamwidth to be realised. However, more care would then be needed to optimize receiver signal to noise ratio. The concept shows promise, but more detailed trials need to be undertaken to accumulate sufficient statistics on vehicle radar signatures, target detection rates and the effect of unwanted targets and multipath signals. It should be pointed out that even when an adequate performance is realised, the economic justification for such a radar would rest on the availability of low cost microwave components.
