The tasks which represent a special challenge to the automobile designer today, can be summed up under the terms of 'economics', 'environmental protection', 'safety', 'reduced maintenance', 'logevity' and 'comfort'. Just as in the past, these development objectives can be reached only by systematically perfecting the individual automobile components. On the other hand, revolutionary developments may be expected from the use and application of modern electronics in the field of optimising, regulating and control process, of monitoring functions and major units as well as data collection and presentation for the passengers of a car. The auto-maker must, however, with the aid of an accurate cost-benefit analysis, carefully weigh the facts in order to determine whether the above mentioned development objectives can be reached by using electronics and whether electronics will bring the driver real progress rather than superficial gadgets.
