Automotive hose serves as piping for a multitude of fluids, notably fuel, oil, gas, brake fluid and water. A highly diverse range of materials accordingly finds application in automotive hose. Two instances where major changes are being sought to deal with environmental problems are fuel hose and air conditioner hose. In addition to restrictions on hydrocarbon emissions, the switch from conventional diesel and petrol fuels to new generation fuels including bioethanol, LNG, DME and hydrogen is impacting on fuel hoses. Changes in the refrigerant could also greatly affect the requirements of hose material used to make air conditioner hoses. As things stand, the polymer materials hitherto used are unlikely to meet all the requirements placed on this new generation of hoses, and hose manufacturers are busy developing new materials and new technology for hose application. This report reviews the results of development work on prospective air conditioner hose recently undertaken by the writer and co-workers. The outlook in relation to new generation refrigerants is also reviewed.
