In order to warn aircraft of the presence of conductors, B.C. Hydro have used either spheres or cones which have been hung from the conductor or from auxiliary 'messenger' cables. For many years it has been found that these marker systems were unreliable. Typical failures included: fatigue cracking in the spheres or cones, damage caused by the markers swinging into the conductors and various vibration related damage to the suspension hardware which joined the marker to the line.
