This paper introduces watertight welding aboard the cable ship during ocean block equlizer (OBE) insertion in a submarine cable system. An OBE is inserted every approximately 20 repeaters on an undersea coaxial cable installation. The OBE housing is made of high pressure resisting Cu-Be alloy. Its welded sections must guarantee watertightness for a period of more than twenty- five years on the bottom of the sea. To guarantee a high quality weld, welding technology which shipboard work is taken into full considerations was accomplished. In this case, the welding section resistance to water is evaluated at pressure corresponding to water depth at 12.000 meters. Also, airtightness is evaluated at 800 kg/cm(exp2) He gas pressure, which ensures good permeability. The welding equipment was installed on the UdSSR cable ship 'INGUL' in 1978, based on the development results introduced in this article.
