The system here referred to as “Dynamic Leveling” presents one solution to a low power active suspension system and its control. The system has been developed at the Department of Machine Elements, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm Sweden.
In addition to a variable damping capability, the actuators are connected to a central hydraulic system to produce a lifting force. The actuators and the control strategy are designed to improve the vehicle performance with an emphasis of a low power consumption. This is achieved by dividing the power demand between adding and dissipation of power. Dissipative demands are performed by an internal valve inside the actuator.
An adaptive scheme changes the vehicle damping gains when the road condition interferes with the natural frequency of the wheel. The vehicle performance is verified through pole placement of the closed loop system and evaluated in the frequency and time domain. The results show a large improvement in comfort and road holding in comparison with a standard vehicle.
