Ideas and developments in electrical systems are being stimulated by progress in power electronics; nowhere is this more apparent than in the marine industry. Indeed, it may be that such advances will lead to dc-distribution systems appearing once again in vessels. Concomitant with these developments is the need for new methods, or adaptation of known methods, to be found to deal with design and analysis problems that will inevitably arise.

The problem considered in this paper is an extension of that considered in Sudhoff’s original paper and our first three parts in the current series. Parts 1, 2 and 3 have discussed the response of the system when attempting to stabilise it with a capacitor C. Root-locus, Bode diagrams and Kharitonov polynomial tools have been used in these investigations. In this part of the paper consideration is given to further improving the stability and transient behaviour. Attempts to improve the behaviour by adding compensating components into the main dc path lead, generally, to loss of energy efficiency or, in some other way, unacceptable conditions being manifested.
