The field of transportation was one of the first areas agreed for cooperation between the Balkan countries when efforts for cooperation and development were initiated some six years ago. It was thus implicitly recognized that transport, and communications in general, is a field of primary importance for the development of the area.
This paper attempts an overall review of the existing situation and the prospects concerning transport infrastructure and organization in the southeastern part of Europe, an area that includes Greece, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. Emphasis is given to the technical and economic aspects of transportation, while the more political or social aspects are only touched upon when necessary. The object is to provide an overall and concise view of the situation and to point out some of the most important problems whose solution would ease existing delays and reduce costs in the movement of goods and people in this area.
