To analyse the thick plate bending induced by induction heating, the efficient computation for temperature distribution is particularly important. Although the coupled electromagnetic and thermal conduction analysis is an accurate approach, it is time consuming and is hard to apply to practically large size plate bending. In this study, an efficiently equivalent surface heat source (ESHS) model was developed using the effective heating power and distribution radius. Firstly, the relation between the ESHS and five induction heating parameters were derived by mathematic formulae. Secondly, to identify parameters of the formulae with a small amount of sample data, the dimensional analysis was performed and four dimensionless variables were proposed. Finally, the ESHS was employed to analyse the transient thermal conduction during induction heating. The analysed results obtained from the proposed model and coupled simulation model were compared with experimental ones. It is shown that the proposed model had a good accuracy and also reduced the computation time considerably. This reveals that the developed ESHS can be used for efficient simulation of thermal conduction of induction heating process.
