Supervision is a crucial process in the development of legal practitioners, occurring as part of legal education and in legal practice. Supervision, if appropriately utilised, has the potential to effectively transition law graduates to autonomous legal practitioners. Realising this potential involves understanding the nature and purpose of supervision, the challenges faced by supervisors and supervisees, and the factors which contribute to effective outcomes. Legal practitioners can usefully draw lessons from clinical legal education and other professional disciplines.
