As the economic success of private actors in outer space keeps rising, sustainable use of outer space is becoming a more pressing issue. Although mitigation of space debris and sustainability of outer space activities have been issues for a long time now, there has never been a real impetus for the private space actors to get involved, as financial benefits often outweigh environmental considerations. As more and more satellites are launched, on-orbit servicing missions could provide for a more sustainable way of conducting space activities. Past missions have shown that it is technologically possible to conduct on-orbit servicing missions. The author argues that the solution to making on-orbit servicing a success is entering into public–private partnerships. States should initiate these partnerships and thus create an incentive for private actors to take on responsibility and accountability for the activities they undertake in outer space.
