Significant progress has been made in the past decade in understanding the causes of curve noise related to squeal and flanging. However, at many locations around the world, isolation of factors leading to these noise sources continues to be elusive and curve noise continues to be a source of annoyance. This paper investigates the presence of squeal, flanging and other high noise events at three interconnected sharp passenger curves in New South Wales, Australia. A longitudinal study (one year apart) of rail and noise parameters was undertaken at three locations (loudest location on each major curve) at this site. By undertaking measurements of common variables across both years, differences in high noise events were analysed and quantified to understand the underlying causes of curving noise in this area. The results provide insights into the complex role of speed at this site.
