The status of glasses suitable for use as infrared optical fibers is reviewed. A historical perspective on the technology, and the criteria employed to select appropriate glasses are presented. Heavy metal fluoride and chalcogenide glasses are assessed, with special emphasis on their emerging commercial availability.
