This paper presents a simulation framework for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone mission planning and execution using Software-in-the-Loop (SITL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulations. The simulation framework enables dynamic flight path adjustments through waypoint drawing, altitude inputs, and mid-mission rerouting in response to unexpected air or ground risk events like adverse weather. The system incorporates sectional charts and different air and ground risk maps. The SITL simulation is then validated through a scaled-down HIL simulation. The framework supports a safe and efficient BVLOS operation. It helps enhance pilots’ preparedness for critical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications in disaster response, logistics, and agriculture. The work shows how important simulation environments can become in advancing BVLOS mission capabilities and training standards.
