The tension in auxiliary and camshaft drive belts is set during assembly of the engine. Repeatable and accurately known tensions are required to ensure long life and low noise levels. Experimental results, based on tests carried out on two engines, show how setting procedure, pulley tolerances and creep can affect the long-term values of belt tension. The importance of careful design of tension-adjusting systems is emphasized.
