Although it is common knowledge that direct injection provides high thermal efficiency and lower emission in internal combustion engines, the fuel impingement on the combustion chamber wall would lead to engine performance and particulate emission deterioration. Reducing emission products and cooling loss caused by fuel adhesion on the chamber wall is urgent. To solve the problems above, we developed the new impinging injection and multi-impinging injection method. The impinging injection method uses two injectors set axisymmetric opposite each other, to realize the fuel atomization effect caused by the liquid fuel spray impingement. The multi-impinging injection is impinging injection with two liquid fuel injection stage. From our previous study, the efficiencies of impinging injection and multi-impinging injection have been proved through the combustion characteristic improvements. From our previous study, the n-butanol/iso-octane and n-butanol/n-hexadecane blend fuels show different tendencies on combustion improvements with n-butanol blend ratios at 0%, 25%, and 50%. The fuel properties, especially the viscosity and evaporation pressure, affect droplet size greatly during the fuel spray impingement. The optimal injection timing conditions for different blend fuels need investigation. Therefore, in this paper, experiments have been carried out to investigate the effects of blend fuel properties and injection timing conditions on combustion characteristics (maximum burning pressure, heat release rate, and ignition delay time) by using impinging injection and multi-impinging injection method under heterogeneous combustion field. The fuels used n-butanol/iso-octane and n-butanol/n-hexadecane blend fuels with n-butanol blend ratios at 10%, 20%, and 30%. All experiments were at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. We used the laser diffraction spray analyzer to observe droplet size distributions of different blend fuel types. To observe the combustion characteristics, we used a piezo-electric pressure transducer to record the combustion pressure during the combustion process. Through the combustion characteristics analyses, we discussed the influence of injection timing conditions for different butanol blend fuel types for new advanced combustion techniques of new type actual engine by using new alternative fuels.
