Because commercial airlines are losing millions of dollars each year due to severe weather conditions, there is an economic basis for developing equipment that will allow lower approach minimums. The airlines have active programs of improving airplane system performance and pilot proficiency through training. Present jet altitude minimums for approach may be reduced from 300 feet to 200 feet with present instruments and automatic pilots.The Douglas Aircraft Company and Sperry Phoenix Company have developed a practical system for overcoming approach-beam variations through the use of barometric sink rate. Barometric sink rate was demonstrated to provide a smooth flight path to point of flare. Additional work needs to be considered and improved instrument displays most likely will be required.
