THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TRAFFIC which an airport terminal is required to serve are fundamental to the planning concept, and the way the concept is developed through the various design stages. The full planning process calls for a complete understanding of not only the requirements of airlines, but also the corporate objectives of the airport owner, the standards of service aimed for, the role of the terminal, and the behavioural patterns of the passengers who will use it. The paper discusses these aspects and shows how they impact on the choice of concept and the design process.
