The automotive industry has developed techniques for assessing the service life of steel components through a combination of finite element analysis and strain controlled fatigue data. These techniques require knowledge of the cyclic properties of various steel grades for which the processing, structure and mechanical properties have been characterized. This paper describes the development, under the auspices of the American Iron and Steel Institute, of a strain controlled fatigue database for steel bar products used in chassis and power train applications. The format of the database is described, and the use of cyclic properties to predict component life is discussed.
