Nearly all of the small and medium sized passenger cars manufactured throughout the world are now front wheel driven. The dynamic weight distribution and consequent braking systems of these cars has enabled the development of a two channel anti-lock brake system, known as the Lucas Girling Stop Control System, that achieves the major characteristics of much more complex three or four channel systems at a substantially lower cost. This paper describes the Stop Control System, its main component, typical performance achievable, and proposes practical assessment criteria.
