A 14 month test carried out by the New York Central Railroad shows that an organo-boron additive can cure a serious fuel-filter plugging problem which has plagued railroads since they switched to diesel equipment more than 20 years ago. The role played by the boron additive is that of killing the microorganisms which cause the filter plugging. Associated benefits are cleaner injector nozzles, reduced engine wear, less sludge and sediment, and improved storage stability. These studies, conducted jointly by the New York Central Railroad and The Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) were the first large scale field tests ever made to determine the effectiveness of a fuel additive as a microbicide.
