A new piston concept has been developed for Detroit Diesel series 71 engines that differs substantially from pistons in any other engine now in volume production. This paper discusses the design objectives, design evolution, types of testing, and test results. Some of the topics discussed include top ring groove wear effects, temperature measurements and results, including “cocktail shaker” oil cooling effects, reduction in pin bushing wear, and various ruggedness and durability tests.
