This paper discusses “contact corrosion,” a term applied to attack behind moulding parts attached to automotive bodies. Tests have shown that the introduction of zinc plate on stainless steel mouldings is a sound method of arresting accelerated body steel attack. In the absence of paint damage or weakness, road tests indicated no initiation or acceleration of body steel corrosion. Inadvertant chipping or puncturing of paint films during attachment of trim contributes to corrosion. The authors make three recommendations to provide protection for body steel: employ insulating clips in attaching trim to body, avoid paint damage by careful assembly, use zinc plated stainless steel.
