The corrosion attack inside the wet section of the automotive exhaust systems is caused by the condensates of the combustion gases bearing appreciable chloride ion concentrations and often acidic pH-values. The corrosion resistance of the different stainless steels used is generally examined in different test procedures, which also provides a diversity in the results. A new test method has been developed and leads to a new test specification which is recommended by the German Association of the Automotive Industry. This test specification affords a basis for the investigation of the corrosion behavior of stainless steels for automotive exhaust systems. The test method considers the wet-dry-alternation, the impact of the chloride ions in an acidic medium and the temperature stress inside the system. At the University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz, Germany, the corrosion resistance of different stainless steel grades for the automotive exhaust systems has been assayed in a laboratory test on the basis of the standard test VDA 230-214 for austenitic types with and without molybdenum, ferritic types with different contents of chromium and molybdenum and manganese alloyed austenitic types. The present paper describes the standard test, the developed testing machine for performing the test and the test variation which was carried out at the University of Applied Sciences in Konstanz, Germany. The new test method offers an automatically controlled test with stable test conditions and the possibility of grading the exposure to corrosion.
