Recent developments to overcome the lower power and idle fuel consumption features of the automotive gas turbine engine have led to a new concept for applying this type of engine in military heavy-duty, off-the-road vehicles. In this application, a “siamesed” turbine configuration is employed, in which the compressor is split into two separate components. One component supplies air for the gas generator section and the other supplies air for the power section of the engine, both systems being selectively coupled by an arrangement of hydromechanical and aerodynamic links. The many advantages of this unique concept are described.
