The VISTA Planning Document provides details on the development of a powerful, versatile, user-friendly vehicle impact/handling simulation model. The model uses the general purpose finite element codes, DYNA3D/NIKE3D developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. A three part program is discussed. Part I is a demonstration phase and is planned to take one and one-half (1-1/2) years. During this phase, both the vehicle handling (real-time and NIKE3D) and the vehicle impact (DYNA3D) computer code enhancements (made to-date) will be executed and validated against experimental test data using a developed vehicle model, roadside safety structure model, and terrain model. Part II expands the work of Part I. All vehicle handling and vehicle impact/crash code developments work will be completed. All vehicle models, roadside safety structure models, and terrain models will be developed. Part III completes the validation of the vehicle handling and vehicle impact/crash code developments and the user-friendly man-machine interface.
