Phase 3 of the Icebreaker Propulsion Systems Feasibility Study has continued the design development of three candidate propulsion systems, nuclear steam, oil fired steam, and diesel - at 35,000 SHP. This power level has been selected as the preliminary reference for the polar icebreakers by Coast Guard based on various mission requirement studies performed both within the agency and by other contractors. Considerably more detailed and defined systems, components, and space arrangements have resulted and are presented in this report primarily in the form of drawings, schematics and tabular summaries. The propulsion systems presented in this report are by nature still evolving designs, and will be altered to accommodate the various ship non-propulsion requirements as they are developed. Nevertheless, such changes should be relatively minor; all three systems remain technically feasible (References 3 and 4) and can be located within the proposed icebreaker hull design as presently configured, provided A.C. - D.C. power conversion is employed (Reference 6).
