Crew members of 17 combat ships rated their berthing areas, messing areas, head (sanitary) facilities, and the entire ships on 11 environmental dimensions and several additional items, and 25 environmental scales were constructed. Contributions of each of six sources of variance -- ship type, ship, department, division, berthing compartment by ship, and division by ship -- to the prediction of individual environmental scores were determined. The results indicated that crew members' perceptions were strongly influenced by the actual physical characteristics of their ships, work areas, and sleeping compartments.
