A flywheel energy-storage system is desirable for individually powered vehicles for two primary reasons: (1) it reduces peak engine-horsepower requirements if these are determined on the basis of transient requirements such as acceleration and (2) it permits the kinetic energy of the vehicle to be recovered and stored during deceleration rather than dissipated as heat. A transit bus is unusually able to benefit from these characteristics because the operating mode of these vehicles is typically slow speed, stop and go, with engine-power requirements based on acceleration performance. Therefore, an adequate means to conserve kinetic energy and average out the power requirements of the engine can have significant effect on the operating economics of the bus. (Author)
