The review is concerned with the theoretical and experimental data for circular, subsonic jets, with emphasis on the aerodynamic effects related to VTOL aircraft applications. Data for single and multiple jets in and out of ground effect, and the influence of external flows are included. Theoretical and experimental relations for the simpler jet configurations are reviewed initially to provide a context for the later discussion of more complex jet configurations. Data for situations involving the simplest geometric constraints are given preference, as opposed to aerodynamic information for specific aircraft configurations, with a view toward theoretical interpretation.
