The principal elements of landscape that affect the capability of vehicles to travel cross country are topography, surface composition and consistency, vegetative cover, and hydrography. These elements combined in various ways tend to deny and slow movement, decrease efficiency, increase maintenance, increase driver fatigue, and control direction. This paper presents a few techniques which have been developed to classify and map terrain elements in objective and fairly quantitative terms. Techniques of this type may eventually permit valid evaluations of trafficability and mobility characteristics of specific areas. (Author)
