Environmental and ship performance data were collected aboard the USCGC POLAR SEA in January - March 1981 as part of a multi-year program to make an operational assessment on the feasibility of a year-round transportation system serving Northwestern Alaska. A method was developed to calculate ice forces resulting from transiting pressure ridges. Real-time data was collected, recorded and analyzed, measuring ship motions and propulsion parameters. The onboard computer system reduced the data and generated time histories of the calculated ice forces.
