The case study compares various aspects of alternative township layouts on a sample area in Umlazi, Natal, with particular regard to the costs of providing easy vehicular access to the houses. The existing township layout has been compared with an innovative layout and three variations of it. The comparisons involve the following: (a) The estimated costs of installing or constructing water reticulation, sewer reticulation, stormwater drainage system and road system; (b) The advantages and disadvantages of the various layouts as regards costs of vehicular access to each house, flood protection and flood damage.
