The Transport Operations Research Group (TORG) of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne received a grant from SERC in 1984 to design, install and evaluate a real-time passenger information system at a major public transport interchange (Heworth) in Tyne & Wear. The project covered the design and purchase of the system; the selection of the site for operation; the installation of the equipment; and the conduct and analysis of a program of surveys to evaluate the effectiveness of the system in practice. The report describes the system and its method of operation. The overall reliability of the system is discussed. Passengers' perceptions of waiting times both before and after the installation were determined by survey, with the surprising result that many passengers appear to underestimate their waiting time. This applied especially to those waiting for a particular bus whereas those waiting simply for the next bus, irrespective of route, tended to overestimate their wait and the estimate was improved by the provision of the information.
