This report provides the results of a six-day at-sea assessment conducted in December 1999 aboard a U.S. Navy LHD-1 class amphibious assault ship. LHD-1 class ships are 844-foot in length and manned by a crew of approximately 1,100 ships force and 1,700 embarked troops (Marines). The ship's mission is to perform as a primary landing ship for assault operations conducted by Marine Expeditionary Units. LHD-1 class ships use landing craft air cushion vehicles, conventional landing craft and helicopters to transport Marine assault forced ashore. In a secondary role, these ships perform sea control and limited power projection missions using AV-8B Harrier aircraft and anti-submarine warfare helicopters. The CD-ROM is Appendix P to the report.
