The performance of the Heavy Weather Damage Avoidance System (HWDAS), installed on the barge carrying vessel Lash Italia was monitored for five round trip voyages. All equipment performed extremely well, and checks of the computer output against analog records proved the accuracy of the digitized information. An experimental side frame strain gage, for predicting shipping of water on deck forward, was found more useful than the original deck mounted gages. Computer predictions of the effects of maneuvering were more accurate than expected. Suggested criteria for safe limits of ship response are given. Recommendations for future improvements of the equipment are detailed.
