The Main Line Traffic Signal Priority Study was initiated in 1983 to investigate the subset of transit priority measures associated with signalized intersections. Signal phase durations, offsets from adjacent intersections and special phases can be manipulated to reduce transit trip times. Phases I and II of the study have examined the effectiveness of changes to the fixed signal timings along portions of two arterial roads: Queen Street and Finch Avenue West. The results were inconclusive. Phase III investigated the possibility of pre-emptive traffic signal priority by testing a simplistic strategy at two locations, with favorable results achieved at the Queen Street/Sherbourne Street intersection. Based on the results of Phase III, it was decided to proceed with a demonstration project to assess the effectiveness of traffic signal priority for streetcars along a small network of signalized intersections using state-of-the-art software and hardware. The objective of Phase IV of the study was the identification of the location, technology and resources associated with the demonstration project.
