NOAA's mission is to ensure the safety and welfare of the general public and improve the quality of life through efficient use of its resources. To accomplish this mission, NOAA operates, manages, and improves the nation's operational environmental satellite systems; observes and reports weather conditions, issues forecasts and warnings of severe weather and floods, and assists community preparedness programs for weather-related natural disasters; uses satellite data and aerial photography for charting, coastal mapping, and geodetic research; employs satellite data to improve the assessment and conservation of marine life; archives and disseminates satellite data to meet the need of users in the public, private, and scientific communities; and uses satellites in research programs aimed at improving the nation's environmental services. NOAA elements that participate directly in aeronautics and space programs are: The National Earth Satellite Service, the National Weather Service, the Environmental Data and Information Service, the National Ocean Survey, the Office of Ocean Engineering, the National Marine Fisheries Service, and the Environmental Research Laboratories.
