Modern attack aircraft are equipped with ingenious technical devices to detect and indicate targets in the terrain. However, an operator is mostly needed to make a reliable identification. A field experiment was carried out to investigate the possibility of identifying ground targets from air at different distances. Eight subjects, lacking experience in air-to-ground target recognition, identified a target at fixed distances. Five military vehicles alternated as possible targets. Four subjects flew simultaneously, each in one aircraft, towards the target. There were 144 flight courses in all, with seven identification spots each. The mean distance for recognition was 2.5 km. The percentage of target identification in good visibility was even at very long distances larger than by chance. An analysis of variance indicated significant differences between flight tracks (p(F)<.05), but it did not show any significant differences between subject groups. There were inter-individual differences in performing the task. Possible reasons are discussed.
