The surface-to-air engagement scenario is analyzed to illustrate the operation of an IR missile. The function of a guided missile is defined and the basic aerodynamic characteristics of a missile are discussed. The implications of the missile's propulsion unit, drag, and controls are presented. The basic principles of guidance are reviewed, concentrating on homing guidance. Reticle, image scanning, and focal plane array seekers are reviewed. Decoys, smoke, clouds, modulated jammers, destruction, tactical maneuvering, and radiation shielding countermeasures are summarized.
