The study was designed to evaluate the use of colored pavements as a control and guidance device through intersections with left-turn slots. Three rural intersections were selected for this study. In each of them at least one left-turn lane was covered with green asphalt and a painted channelizing island, forming the slot, was covered with yellow asphalt. Data on spot speeds, lateral placement of vehicles and flow patterns were collected before the installation of the colored asphalt, during the first month following the installation and 6 months after the installation. The only significant effect of the colored pavement was to discourage some drivers from crossing the channelizing island when entering the left-turn lane during the day. No significant influence was observed on the velocity of the vehicles in the through lane. No change could be detected on the drivers' pattern of entry into the left-turn lane. It was also found that the colored asphalt had little effect on traffic flow patterns at night. (Author)
