An inventory of regulations and standards regarding road roughness in a number of European and non-European countries was made. The purpose was to bring together such regulations concerning the performance control of new pavements and the criteria for re-surfacing. The result shows that regulations for the latter are almost non-existent, Finland and Great Britain being the only countries having reported any such regulations. The most common method used for the measurement of road roughness is the measurement by straight edges of varying lengths. Road roughness standards based upon measurements by the Bump Integrator, the Viagraph, or the Goniograph do, however, also exist.
