This report describes an investigation of the feasibility of, and design concepts for, Supersonic Multiple Bomb Racks for use on the F-4, F-105, and F-111 series of aircraft. Design and performance criteria are established, and a preliminary design is presented and analyzed. Wind tunnel test results show that while little or no reduction in aerodynamic drag of loaded racks can be achieved, the use of new concepts for their construction will greatly enhance their strength and rigidity, and drag of the empty racks will be vastly reduced. Because of the increased performance requirements, weight and cost will necessarily increase. However, the resultant reduction of overall aircraft drag results in a 20 to 30 per cent increase in maximum Mach number at cruise altitudes, and an increase in range (or reduction in fuel required) for all missions studied.
