The dynamic aquaplaning of pneumatic tires with diameters ranging from 9 to 17 inches, was investigated on a rolling road test apparatus using a 1/4 in. deep water layer laid onto the ground belt at matching speed. The aquaplaning speed was found to be related to the average ground contact pressure, higher contact pressures giving higher aquaplaning speeds. The tire inflation pressure was the main component of the ground contact pressure but there were contributions from the tire causing stiffness and centrifugal effects due to tire rotation. Further investigations include tin shapes during aquaplaning, water pressures, flow analysis, and longitudinal tread grooving.
