This study is concerned with the interactions between tungsten and the exhaust constituents from solid-propellant rocket motors, where tungsten is used for such components as nozzle liners and jetevators. Since the solid propellants containing aluminum are of greatest current interest, the reactions between tungsten and molten alumina constitute a most important part of the investigation. Interactions between tungsten and rocket exhaust may be conveniently considered in three main categories: chemical, mechanical, and thermal. In the work performed to date, emphasis has been placed on the chemical interactions. The current phase of the project, Phase I, concerns the reactions between pure tungsten and the rocket exhaust constituents, as a basis for understanding the behavior of tungsten in these applications.
