This report considers the effectiveness of current industry practice in the burn-in of avionics equipment. The burn-in test results for six avionics systems are analyzed using the chance Defective Exponential model for the failure rate. Based on the mode, effectiveness measures for burn-in are developed. Flight test results are also evaluated to determine the adequacy of current burn-in techniques. Cost effectiveness considerations for the burn-in process are addressed. Results of an industry survey on current practice and opinions concerning various issues in the burn-in of avionics are presented. (Author)
