The effects were monitored of a computerized urban traffic control system (UTC) which came into operation in May 1979 in the central area of Bangkok - a city with notorious traffic problems. Surveys were carried out in order to assess the effects of UTC on car and bus journey times, and on the proportion of drivers complying with red traffic signals. Changes in traffic demand between the two surveys were small, enabling valid conclusions about UTC performance to be drawn.
