The structural dynamics test program for INTELSAT 5 (1-5) communications satellites included a low frequency axial shock spectrum test whose purpose was to demonstrate Ariane launcher compatibility. The implementation of the test during Ariane 1 launcher development is described and seven years of test operations ending when the last 1-5B spacecraft was launched on on Ariane 2 are summarized. The early problems encountered in simulating the correct shock spectrum at the base of the satellite while achieving the proper loads at other locations are discussed. The development of test specifications is described and test results are compared with in flight response measurements from all 1 to 5 Ariane launches. The benefits and pitfalls of low frequency shock spectrum testing for spacecraft are discussed.
