In order to obtain vertical wind profiles from aircraft and ships without a stabilized radar platform, FGGE used retransmitted NAVigational AID (NAVAID) signals. The NAVAID vertical sounding systems were based on the international Omega Navigation System and were successfully operated by an international research fleet of ships and aircraft in remote tropical ocean areas during the FGGE Special Observing Periods. Fundamental experience on advantages and disadvantages of the NAVAID windfinding was gained. The method provides a practical tool for the meteorological instrumentation of the World Weather Watch.
